TMR Tour: Day 3

I have a weensie bit of time (is weensie a word or did I just make that up?), so I thought I'd pop in and update the blog.

I'm not going to give you guys many details, because I'm doing my best to do that on Twitter and it's way too overwhelming to think about doing that on here as well. Much easier in short doses. So you guys were right - Twitter is good! It's easy to sign up and follow me: CLICK HERE.

Yesterday was Seattle, today through Saturday is the San Francisco/Oakland area. I've had to get up at 4:00 am for two days in a row, so sleeping in until 8:00 tomorrow will be pure bliss. Yeah, I know, wah wah.

I have no idea how my book is doing sales-wise, and I'm trying really hard not to worry about it. Notice I used the word "trying" because actually I'm spending every free second of the day worrying about it. Just being honest - I can't stop! This has been building for a year and a half, and I'm just sincerely hoping it meets my publisher's expectations. (The previous statement will cause several people to send me emails telling me to cease and desist immediately and might use such words as "idiot" and "pathetic" and "do shut up!" But I'm trying people.)

Nah, it's not really that bad - I'm mostly kidding. I can honestly say I'm enjoying this all very much, and I do believe in my story and that it will connect with many readers out there. I do believe that. It might take time to develop word of mouth, but it WILL happen.

(Hey, I should go into motivational speaking. What's that tall dude's name with the straight edged iron jaw and perfect hair? Yeah, I should be that guy. I'll go around asking people what they want in life and then tell them that it WILL happen, emphasis on the word WILL, all caps preferably. Maybe I'll even pull out all the stops and do the quote thingy with the first two fingers on each hand for certain words.)

Anyway. I'm sorry - this blog post has told you absolutely nothing. I hope my brain's not frying already after only two days. I guess I feel like I've spilled a lot of details on Twitter and I can't bring myself to repeat.

So... I don't know. What do YOU guys want to hear about? Let me know in the comments so I don't embarrass myself with such a pathetic blog post again.

My sincere thanks to everyone involved so far with the tour. I don't dare mention names - I just can't do it. I would leave someone out and I can't risk that. (So instead I mention no one? Great logic Dashner!) But so far every aspect of this trip has been wonderful and you've all made me feel important and loved. Thank you very much.

See you all over on Twitter and back here very soon. Thanks for reading!

I'm behind the times, and thus, still fighting against joining Twitter. I don't know why. So...how about the top highlights of the past few days? Like...your favorite moments.

I don't blame you for wondering and worrying about your first week of sales. (And this is not a cease and desist order, because that's an impossible request.) Maybe you should go see a movie? Or rent an in room movie, or watch one on your iPod on the plane? The key is distraction!

Have fun in CA!

Don't worry about your sales, you must be doing great. I went to Barnes & Noble Tuesday to buy it and THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY. I thought that was rather rude, since you spend so much time in that store...(although they did have a big sign about your signing on the 19th.)

So, since they didn't have any, they must have already sold out. See? No need to worry. It's so popular that your faithful fans can't even get copies.

James, I don't think I'm aloud to join twitter, but to keep up with all of it, I (being brilliant I didn't think of it before) put it on my subscriptions for my google reader so now I can keep up to date (when I get around to reading it) and not brake the rules. Of my family.

You've been doing great on the twitter thing so high five. Sounds like they've kept you super busy with schools and signings. Does your jaw ever hurt from smiling so much all day long?

You can follow James' delightful Tweets by browsing to http://twitter.com/jamesdashner.

James: keep it up! Your off-the-cuff posts make my day (several times a day!)

See you in Ann Arbor in November

News from Idaho. You were sold out at Hastings, they opened a new box up for you at Barnes and Noble, I didn't see it at Walmart, but then, this is Boise. I guess you can tell what I spent my birthday doing- looking for your book at all the stores. You're going to be fine. But I have to tell you, it was surreal holding a copy of your book in my hands.

I don't know if my Tweet from yesterday reached you, but Mawbooks and Aprilynne perpetuated it. Basically this girl came into my bookstore while I was stocking Savage's newest FarWorld on the shelf, and she asked me for a copy of The Hunger Games. I told her about Maze Runner, and she bought that instead. My proudest moment :-)

I want to hear one funny thing that happens to you in each post. I miss the funny driver stories and the I was so tired I wore two different colored socks stories. Come on James...bring back the funny.
Dashnog=midid [me did]-anecdote a midid is a hilarious anecdote about something you did.
"so the midid of the day was when I looked down at lunch and realized I was wearing my butterfly slippers at the board meeting."

Thought I'd tell ya the review in the Deseret News was purty good, but I want to take her to task on complaining about your slang. I'm only on Chapter 7 because Joseph and I are fighting over the book (why didn't I buy 2, why oh why) but so far I REALLY like the slang. REALLY. It gives the story flavor.

Dash,

The Tall guy with the Jaw, the motivational one....Tony Robbins...

I was in B & N today, handed a few parents looking for books for their kids a copy of Maze Runner and with 8 words, sold 3 copies in under 3 minutes..."Lord of the flies of the 21st century!"

Thats all it took and even the bookstore lady who put a copy back under the counter for herself said she was going to push Maze and that was a great pitch line.

Graham and I are on the payroll right???

Congrats on the release of The Maze Runner, James!

I've been meaning to stop by and say hello since our awesome meet-up in Utah, but I just got back from Boston last night and have been CRAZY - which I KNOW you understand.

I'm super-excited to read TMR. You might be pleased to know that I noticed it all over Boston this past week, from the smallest of Indies to the largest B&Ns.

Believing in your story is the best thing you can do. It's the only thing, really, that you can do at this point!

Have a GREAT time on tour!
:D

I know that this is way after the fact, but I want to know what was the hardest thing about writing Maze and how you overcame it. I'd also like to know if you have any suggestions on how to make the setting of a story feel like a real place.

Okay. I'm seriously depressed I missed you in Seattle. I need to keep up better--totally my fault. But best wishes! I'm incredibly happy for you, and I'm going to go buy your book today--even if I don't get to have you personally sign it for me. Have fun.

James -- of course eensie is a word! Haven't you ever sung the song about the eensie-weensie spider that crawled up the waterspout?

I know how you feel when you worry about your first day of sales. I find myself in a similar situation: I write fan fiction and post it for the all the world to read. Naturally, I worry about how many hits and reviews I get, which is the virtual equivalent of sales. But I'm sure you're doing great in that department!

I pre-ordered my copy of TMR from amazon.de and I'm all but frothing at the mouth, waiting for it to be delivered. As I often tell my husband, if I wanted patience, I'd be a hospital! Maybe it will come to-morrow.

I hope you knock 'em dead, James! (in a nice dystopian way) My son was complaining about 7am basketball practice this morning, so I told him that he should stop the whining because he didn't have to get up at 4 a.m. like James Dashner.

I'm with Diva Donna on this one. Tell us your funny moments. =]

Have so much fun, James. You'll rock. Just like you always do.

melanie, it's the itsie bitsie spider not eensie weensie. hmmmm... james, just to be sure....

dashnog: weensie: a tiny amount of time before an author has to run from his adoring fans.

usage: James has a weensie bit of time before he has to hide so he's not trampled.

James now it is a word if it wasn't before.

Wanted to send you a message on Twitter, but I am still a newbie as far as that goes.

Just finished The Maze Runner. WOW!!!! Unbelievable!!! Now I have to get it signed. Maybe you could just send me your signature on a piece of paper and I can tape it in there.

Have fun on the rest of your tour!

Since you wanted to know: I got The Book the day after it was released at B and N. I tried to get it at Borders the day of release but they didn't have them! It really bugged me. Oh, well.

I'm about half way through and LOVING it. In fact, I should be reading it now instead of being distracted by the computer. Yep.

Enjoy the tour. :)

I read Maze Runner. Yet another James Dashner book I couldn't put down. Family? What family?
My burning question for you to answer is this: When I was reading Maze Runner, it got into my brain and I was calling people shuck-faces in my head all day long. Did that happen to you when you were immersed in writing, and did you ever slip and use Glade slang out loud when talking to real people?

Vanessa M. said...

James, so I just checked and my library has finally got your books under processing *grumble* took long enough. But I am going to get you book today. I've finally got the time to actually do it.

I got someone else to buy Maze today on audio! Keep an eye on them Tweets, Jimbo :-)
