Change the World Tour, Take 3

Well, I believe it's official. THE 13TH REALITY: THE HUNT FOR DARK INFINITY is officially released. We sold out on Saturday and I'm going off to promote it, so I think that means it's so. I hope a lot of you are excited to go read it!

It's hard to believe that an entire year has passed since I first went on the Change the World Tour. It took me from Virginia to Atlanta to California. Part 2 last fall saw me go to New Hampshire, Boston, South Carolina, Texas, and San Francisco. With lots of Arizona, Idaho, and Utah mixed in.

For the release of Book 2, we're scaling back a lot. I'll be spending the next 3 or 4 weeks visiting schools and doing signings in Utah and Arizona. Then we're putting a moratorium on visits for awhile because I have 3 books to write in the next 12 months!

This week I'm in the St. George (Tues, 6:30, Deseret Book) and Logan (Fri, 6:30, Deseret Book) areas. Come see me!!! Next week is Orem then off to Arizona.

I had such an awesome time at LTUE at BYU this past weekend. It was by far the best one yet, with hundreds of attendees and an unbelievable slate of authors (Tracy and Laura Hickman, Brandon Sanderson, Dan Wells, Brandon Mull, Jessica Day George, L.E. Modessitt Jr., David Farland, Aprilynne Pike, Julie Wright, and many others).

I met many aspiring writers and had good times talking to them (including some rather psychotic folks from the Eagle Mountain area). I also did a reading of the first 2 chapters of THE MAZE RUNNER, which I was very nervous about. But it seemed to go over well.

I hate to admit this because of my image as a big tough biker type, and I'm pretty sure no one noticed, but I almost choked up a couple of times reading it. I guess it was just because I've had so much heartache and ups and downs seeing that book finally find a life that it got to me. I hope it's all been worth it when you finally read the thing.

Okay, I spend so much time shamelessly bragging about myself on here, I want to share an unbelievable announcement for my friend Aprilynne Pike. Her book, WINGS, coming from Harper Teen on May 5th, is going to have a first print run of 200,000 copies!!!!!! That is AMAZING. She's going to be a big, big name, and I'm very excited for her.

Well, I hope everyone watched the Oscars. Actually, I'm watching it right now. Whoa, Kate Winslet just won her first one! Sweet. Won't that be cool when THE MAZE RUNNER wins Best Adapted Screenplay? And THE 13TH REALITY wins Best Picture? And I win Best Actor?

Have a great week, and I hope to see some of you during the tour. Later.

You should always try to push for Boston on your tours...and in the summertime its a great place to write with all the soothing beaches and such. =)

I've blogged about book 2 here and now must sit back and patiently wait for the mail man to deliver my copy. Hope it doesn't take long.

Shari's first!

Thanks for that post, Irish. Really awesome and nice. Magenta, we'll look forward to yours!

You're killing me with these Maze Runner "teases." I had to miss your reading of it which I'm torn about. It would have been great to listen but it would have also driven me partly insane to have to wait. Well--MORE insane. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE (you know I love) your other books thus far but Maze Runner just sounds like exactly the kind of book I've been waiting for. Long point just to say: "You're killin' me, man!"

It was awesome to meet you & I'm glad I got my copy of HfDI before it sold out! Woo-Hoo! It SOLD OUT!!!! It's a predictor. Better watch out, James. You think we're bad stalkers now...

It was good to see you on Saturday. I'm bummed I couldn't stay around long enough to catch the Maze Runner reading, but getting to the airport in time to fly home kinda trumps most things.

LTUE was great. Best one I've been to so far, even though it was only my second.

I didn't notice that you got choked up over your reading, I thought it was the fan signs we held up for you...

I think I'll win best supporting actress as Mistress Jane--except I'm not shaving my head.

Dashner-

What? EM folk are crazy? I had know idea. ;)

I just started reading 'A Door in the Woods'. Don't worry, I haven't chucked it across the room yet. In fact, it kept me awake during a very short stretch of my drive yesterday. Have a good time on the tour. Make your way on over to Reno and we'll have lunch.

Arlene :)

I loved seeing you at LTUE this past week! You were great on the panels (and in Sanderson's class).

And I liked that you got choked up reading The Maze Runner. It was sweet. You know, in a big tough biker kind of way. ;-)

Guess we will see you Friday I am really enjoying The Journal of Curious Letters.

Those Eagle Mountain folks must have been some kind of crazy to get such criticism from a world famous author like yourself. I bet they did weird and random things like smell your hair, or stare at your belly. Psychotic indeed!

James Dashner said...

Great comments so far. Some of you even made me snicker through my nose while drinking. Thanks for that.

Deb, good try. My actions were completely rational while yours were worthy of straight jacket implementation.

Q, that old email started working again actually. But I'm still going to set up a new one sometime.

Melinda, you'll shave your head or you'll have to play Mr. Chu.

Arlene, I'm anxious to hear your remarks on that book.

Okay, me be about to pass out. THE SECOND BOOK CAME OUT YESTERDAY??????!!!!!!????? I was thinking it would be later in the week! I need to head down the street to the bookstore for a second, before I have myself a mini-heart attack!!!!

Woah. I haven't used so many exclamation marks in one place before...

I am really dizzy, gonna pass out now...

the count down scared me when it said 217 days i didnt at first see it say MAZERUNNER

Dashner, Dashner, Dashner.
After all the times we humored your shameless pimping of Maze Runner through three days of panels and dinner you really want to go with 'psychotic'? Well, maybe I can't argue with that...I mean we did hang out with you regardless of the repetitive comments about your many works of fiction. Some of us psycho EM writers might actually read it, (due to the brain washing and all.)

But really I just read the PW blurb and Grats!, Writer Dude. That was good marketing seeing as the book isn't even out for another 217 days.

google results
about 9,990 for Dashner dude
and about 35,000 for James dashner

James Dashner said...

Wil S, I hope it's there. Remember, the exact date it shows up in book stores may vary. I think the national chains may not have it until next week. I'd really like to hear from people as they go look for it.

Donna, you crack me up. That was good stuff.

Interesting google results. Compare it to JK or Stephenie and I still have a long way to go!

It was really neat to meet you at LTUE. And I thought the reading was fantastic! Now I really, really, REALLY can't wait until that one comes out! And don't forget about that book with the monkey you and Jessica Day George are going to co-author! :)

Too lazy to look right now, but will your tour be coming all the way up to Rexburg? Just askin'...

James,

It was great to meet you at LTUE. You are one funny guy, and I look forward to reading your books. Better keep a watch out for those Eagle Mountain folks!

Hey, turns out I know your editor at DB: Lisa M. I'm actually very close to her mom. Small world, eh? Hoping next time we meet I'll have a book for you to sign! Josh Perkey

Deb said...

Dr. James W. Dashner, you are giving good Eagle Mountain folks a bad name. Poor Perkmeister is afraid to travel west of Lehi now, thanks to you :)

Oh well, I guess you can't be completely perfect. But at least you don't like the Falcons, whew!

DJ Rose said...

James,
I can't say anything quite as witty or funny as my other EM writer cohorts, but I did have to get my two cents in.
LTUE was awesome and I studied your shameless pimping techniques. I'll refine them for the day I publish . . .ha ha ha
I sent my daughter to school today with your name and book one of 13th Reality on a scrap of paper for her to find in the library. We'll see if she's lucky.
Good Luck . . .

The Scarlet Tart said...

Wow Dashner-it's like you have fans or something!
I can now put myself in the category of having read one of your books. The first book you ever published, to be exact. Now, I know you're worried about my impression so let me quell your fears. I thought it was a fun read and I'll probably give it to my daughter to check out as soon as she's done with Howl's Moving Castle. The main character, Jimmy, came to life superbly especially having been to Georgia and heard everybody and their mother speak with that dialect. I'm still not sure that I didn't just read a reenactment of your childhood life set in extraordinary circumstances, but that was part of the fun of it. I can't wait for the Maze Runner to be released just for comparisons sake.

Okay, I hope I stroked your ego enough for one day. Here's a cyber jab to your stomach coming straight from my karate class last night. My way of saying you're a punk.

Heather Moore said...

All I know is that I can check your blog every 3 or 4 days and there's always good news!!

Q said...

I sent you an email--I hope it wasn't eaten.

James Dashner said...

Thanks for all the great reviews!

Arlene, I felt the cyber punch. You are one scary lady. Kidding! I'm glad you didn't hate A Door in the Woods.

Deb and all the EM folks: you're nuts.

Diva Donna said...

Is 'nuts' better than 'Psycotic?' I mean what kind of nuts are we talkin' here? Cause I don't mind being a macadamia or even an almond, but I will not stand for being called a 'beernut' or even a peanut (which is actually a legume.) So I'm afraid that depending on the nut referenced here it is hard to say whether that is better than being just plain psycho.

And congrats on Arlene's review. I might read that book now cause if she liked it that says a lot...also good luck on the book signings and such. It must be nice to be so famous..and admired...(imagine whatever degree of sarcasm corresponds with the nut you chose for us. ie. Macadamia=little to no sarcasm and peanut=viscious acidic sarcasm..you get the picture.) From EM,
(your future home, because the people are so nice and the houses are cheap.)

Wow! This is a regular scary people of LTUE reunion over here! I had no idea we had an assigned blog post for overflow psychotic-episodes.

Congrats on your tour Dashner! I would like to stay that I started The 13th Reality, but the minute I walked in the door a friend of mine got very excited and stole it. I better get it back soon or I'll hit him with my car.

The Scarlet Tart said...

Jenn!

How's it going? Yeah, we like to hang out here and shoot the breeze with everyone from the LTUE. It's just a bonus that Dashner's so fun to tease.
