The Maze Runner Trilogy

It's a deal: Books 2 and 3 of THE MAZE RUNNER trilogy have sold to Krista Marino at Delacorte (a division of Random House Children's) by Michael Bourret at Dystel & Goderich, for release in Fall of 2010 and 2011.

Does that sound official enough? I wrote that on my own, ya know.

I'm beyond excited, and won't make a fool of myself by trying to express that. I think you can guess very well how I'm feeling.

This was my (hopeful) plan from the beginning, so it's not like I just pulled 2 sequels out of the air. Each book will be very enjoyable as stand alones, but you will definitely want to read all of them. It tells quite the story!

A couple of interesting sidenotes: Barnes and Noble and Amazon gave them feeback on the cover they'd come up with, and they all mutually agreed to go a different direction. So the ARCs and the catalog may just have a black cover with white lettering since those are about ready to go to press. I've been assured this is actually kinda cool and mysterious. I have every confidence that the eventual cover will be awesome.

Also, I shouldn't even say this, but it looks like they are upping the release date!!! MAYBE. It was scheduled for December this year but may come out in late September. Keep your fingers crossed.

The only slightly scary part of all this: I'm going to be one busy dude. My deadline for Book 2 is July 1st of this year (We sold it based on a 4 page outline). I also have to finish 13th Reality 3 by then. And, of course, I have a book coming out in a week and a half with lots of stuff planned to promote it. And several writer's conferences and other events.

Am I complaining? Absolutely not! These next few months are going to be exactly what I've always dreamed of: the busy life of an author. I hope you guys will stick with me and enjoy the ride!

Trust me James. My fingers are crossed! Us stalkers want the best for our #1 victim. (Did I say stalkers? ... victim?)

Congrats on the 3 book deal! I can't wait. The ARCs are going to be great! If I get an ARC, I might just buy the actual book just to get the cover. Aren't I just the greatest friend?

Well, Jacoby, I guess we have got to something with our blog. He'll be updating us with some very important dates. We gotta make sure we are there and ready.

Boo Yah! I am first!!!!

James, I am shocked. I caught a spelling error in your post!

It tells quiet the story! *Shakes Head* That is 'quite' the error!

Just Kidding! You know we all make mistakes. It's what helps us learn to be better!

Magenta said...

Wow, you sure sound like you're gonna be busy! You're an inspiration to all of us James.

Good job, Lonnie! I told you you'd get it next time.

LouMac said...

Thanks Magenta! I am sure you will be first next time!!!

Flayoki is my spam word today. Weird!!!

Loumac, I have no idea what you're talking about. Go take a look. It's spelled right. :-)

I'm so funny. Really.

James, this is the best news I've heard in a while. Couldn't be happier for you.

And good luck hitting your deadlines. I'm guessing, what, 170,000 words in five months or so, maybe a bit less, for both books? That's about 9,000 words a week, give or take. Certainly doable, but no cake walk. My heartiest good wishes, and I can't wait to see your latest works.

Wow, James. How exciting for you! Congratulations on everything!!

Congratulations, that's so exciting! Your life is going to be busy, but I'm glad you think you will enjoy it. =)

I am really really looking forward to reading The Maze Runner. The plot kind of reminds me of a novel I read as a teenager. I can't remember the title, but it's about a group of kids who get stuck in a harrowing maze of staircases in order to test their ability to be trained to act in a certain way. For the most part, however, the actual environment ultimately has little to do with the story: they could be stranded on a deserted island for all the difference the labyrinth of stairs really made. It sounds like you'll do a much better job with the basic concept.

Anonymous said...

WAHOO!!! YEA!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! *jumping up and down with pom poms and screaming* I'm so excited for you! (Can you tell?) Way to go, James!

Anonymous said...

SUPER CONGRATULATIONS, JAMES!

You owe it all to your own merits, certainly, but I'm still just so proud of you! Are you so psyched?

I'd like to mirror Clint's question: How many words are you counting on approximately? And just a geek question here, how will you divide up the writing? Will you work on one book one day or split your working days in half?

Last question and I'll stop pestering you to death. How do you deal with those peevish "doubt" moments as a writer and still crank out stuff fast enough that you're happy with it? (In other words, how do you get over the slump?)

Ok--it really isn't my last question but I'm making it because I'll never stop asking you questions if I don't limit myself.

Congrats, James! I'm so happy for you! And thrilled for me as a reader! Because even though it's great news for you, you're really giving US a giant present.

Congratulations! I am really looking forward to reading these.

I have been searching Amazon for the next book in this Trilogy. We homeschool and this has been our read aloud. NEVER BEFORE have my children begged me NOT to stop reading.

I have a 7, 9 and 13 year old - they were completely fascinated (and completely bought into) the storyline. We would read for an hour and discuss what we "thought" would happen.

At any rate, we finished up last night and my middle daughter cried over the loss of Chuck. Big buffalo tears - I was choked up too. Wow - it took us all for a ride.

My husband is reading it now - he is trying to understand our new language and is tired of being called a klunkhead or slinthead.

Digging through your blog to find out when the next books is releasing.

OH! My 13 year old is one of National Geographic's DogEared Blog Bloggers - she'll be reviewing it there too!

Thanks for an amazing ride. We'll be checking out the 13th Colony! We are sold on you, Dashner Dude!

You are a fantastic storyteller and I think this book sets up a fascinating concept that could be easily transposed into games and/or movies.

September would be amazing, as it would make for a better birthday for me :D

Spoiler Alert!
We just finished reading Maze Runner. My son is 7. He and I read it together. We loved every word but the ending really really upset me. I wanted to scream and my belly hurt. I can't stand that they are still with the WICKED people and don't know it. I KNEW they were, the "rescue" was too conveniently timed and the people at the nicey nice new building are dressed the same as those scientist at WICKED. Black pants, white shirts, crisply pressed. But, the big question is are they GOOD or BAD? Or is it as case of GOOD but having to do some bad things to get to the greater good. Like, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, sort of thing. I am heartbroken for them! And we are pretty sure Thomas and Teresa are siblings, not a love interest. Anyway, we are anxiously looking forward to book 2!

Your book the Maze Runner is an action mystery comedy (kind of) fantasy sci-fi super epic book. Just finished reading The Maze Runner and handed it to my husband. Had to get online to find out the title of the next book...bummed it hasn't been released, yet...at least I only have a couple of months to wait. :) I loved Maze Runner, but I am torn about recommending it to my 5th graders to read - Parents with 10 years olds, let me know what you think! I know the kids would enjoy it, but any parental concerns about the content? I tend to be conservative...trying to step outside that box...

THE MAZE RUNNER IS A SUPERB BOOK!!! I finished reading book one in one day...sort of. I actually spent all day Saturday reading the maze runner, and I finished the book around 1:30am Sunday morning!!! I love THE MAZE RUNNER!!! I love the constant suspense, the characters, the dialogue, the plot,ECT. I just recently finished reading SCORCH TRIALS, which was also fantastic!!! I just cant wait for the third book to come out!! I'm usually patient, but I have been waiting for to long though its been about...maybe two weeks and some days. I don't know but what I do know is that I cant wait to get my hands on the third book!!!

I don't Thomas and Teresa to get back together!! I knew something was up with that girl when I read the first book!! Teresa really got me angry with her 'staged' betrayal. I'm rooting for Brenda and Thomas in book 3, even though I can tell that wont happen!! :(

Hi, i love your first 2 books so much!! I can't wait for the 3rd book!! I have a question. Some of my friends who were in 8th grade last year at Poe Middle School in VA said that you came and visited that school. They also said that you showed the Maze Runner movie! Like the actual movie!! I thought they were talking about the Maze Runner book trailer, but they said it was an over 1 hour movie! They told me similar events in the movie that were in the book, and they didn't even read the book!! So of course I thought it must be true. And if it is true, where can i watch it or buy it?? BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!

Unknown said...

First of all, I just finished The Scorch Trials yesterday, and I am DYING for the next book. I think that this trilogy has to be the best one I have ever read. I'll make sure to tell anyone I know who is looking for a good book about The Maze Runner.

Second of all, I don't think they should make this trilogy a movie. I just think that so much is lost when a book is scripted, and this book has so much detail and so many ideas that they could never fit it in a 2 hour movie. So please, don't sell this as a movie. :)

Anonymous said...

WOW. That's all I have to say. WOW. I am a teenage girl and don't really read books, but when I do, I have to finish them or it drives me insane thinking about how it will end. However, this book was too great to put down! In advisory we were assigned a book club of 3 people and we had to finish a book within 2 weeks. Easy, peasy. We were supposed to read only such-and-such pages a day, but I (ooops) read the first book in a few hours on the plane :) After we got back and I went back to school, I put a request in for the second book at my library... ALL the books were checked out! And they still all are! However, I ended up getting the Scorch Trials, and I read that book in a few hours, consumed in all the sudden events! I thought it was the end, until I read "End of Book Two" after the note from WICKED at the end. I immediately looked on the internet for the next book, and found out it is supposed to come out in October or something? I was super dissapointed, but it will be 100% worth the wait. Best book I have ever read, EVER! If it was made into a movie, I would go see it a million times! Not to mention that I would also apply to act in it (I want to be in a movie SO badly) :) Anyways, I LOVE this book it's changed my perspective of, like, everything, and everything I think about makes me relate back to your books. AGGGH! I'm going crazy! Can't wait for the Death Cure,

I read "The Maze Runner" back in the spring and with my crazy schedule didn't get to read "The Scorch Trials" until now. :( However, you did NOT disappoint! In my opinion, "The Scorch Trials" was definitely just as good, if not better, than "The Maze Runner". Both were extremely well-written and gripping (finished Book 2 within 4 days) and I absolutely can't wait for the third book. Has a title been released yet? Movie in the plan? Because I'd see it in a heartbeat. (:

In the beginning Thomas said that he saw about 50-60 boys, but later on during the tour, Alby says that he's been there the longest and that is two years. If they only get people once a month assuming none of them are dead they should have about 24. Is this explained later on and if so just say yes and I'll figure it out.

Zack it says in the beginning that they first started with a group of boys probably between 20-30. and then started to bring one once a month. But anyways.... James, you are truly amazing! I started reading the Maze Runner at like 2 Pm and finished it by 2 Am!!! I LOVED IT!!! And I can't wait to read the next two and also look into the other series you've wrote! Congrats on everything! :D

Maze Runner great book Scorch Trails did not like because of what Teresa was made to do 2 Tomas The Death Cure could have fixed that man I hated she died and Newt died why Brenda? Do a 4 book bring Teresa back maybe she lived her and Tomas should have been together. If that is it only book I can read again will be Maze Runner all Tom and Teresa did together not to be together so sad I did like Brenda Tom and Teresa had a past together so disappointed on book 3 for not fixing what book 2 did

I loved the Maze Runner! It was probably the best book I have ever read. I don't know why there's such a big deal about Harry Potter, the Maze Runner is way better. You should make a movie!

This book has been at the top of my nook suggestions for some time, but I had been reluctant to read it because of the synopsis. If you have any doubts about reading this book just know that the synopsis does not do this book justice. I was expecting a sub-par book, but once I bought it I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery along with the characters.

Amazing Series! Read all three books inside of 5 days. Couldn't believe the detail and greatness of the books. -Spoiler alert- Since book 2 I wanted Teresa to die, but when it actually happened I was totally shocked. The only thing that I think would've made the book better is if Thomas and Brenda got together sooner. All in all, amazing series. Had so much fun reading it. Recommended to all of my friends.

One more thing. The mystery throughout the story was interesting and hard to crack as I went along. The greivers were OP, and Janson was a bit wacko. I wonder, did he have the Flare virus or was he immune? Any ways. If You see this post I just want that answer.
