Cover for The Maze Runner

So, let's hear it. What do you think?

The artist's name is Philip Straub. Check out his website: CLICK HERE. I LOVE his work, and I'm so glad they ended up going with him. You can see the full piece (the cover only shows a portion) on his site.

hey ...I put what i thought of it in your other post....

Dude, cool cover! Congrats on the much deserved success. Don't forget the little, insignificant book store managers when you're dodging the press like Stephen King. Remember, we shared a slice of pie at the restaurant oh so long ago. Actually, I ate the pie, but I'm pretty sure you paid for it.

Hey, James! I'm the girl that you signed 13th Reality book 2 around Brandon Mull's stand at the children's book festival at the Provo City Library last Saturday. The Maze Runner looks cool, but I really think The 13th Reality will always be your best series.

I am freaking out at how cool it is. I cannot wait to read it!

Jackson Porter said...

Awesome, I think I'll buy like ten of these just for the slip on cover.

James Dashner said...

Alyssa, that is very nice. It was great to meet you!

Frank, you're buying next time.

#1, tell us again! Give more detail.

Luisa and B2, glad you like it! I'm so relieved that people are feeling that way....

Very intriguing. Can't wait.

Fantastic! Who did the cover art? They did a good job.

With a cover like that, I'd definitely think of reading it.

Well, then again, I don't really know about that, because I've heard so many cool things about Maze Runner that I think I'd read it no matter what the cover looked like.

But still, it looks really good! You see the maze outside, the hedges bright green against a pretty blue sky, and then you see those ominous old doors closing on you, shutting the maze out with its daggers.

I think it gives people a pretty good idea about how the book will go. ^,^

Oh god, you'll laugh at this Dashnog word: doodo. *Pffff!*

It's just a close up of the original....the original that to be quite honest I didn't like very much...

If it was up to me, I would make it like this. A guy and girl holding hands at the beginning of one of the entrances. the maze would slope down just a tad so you could see the top of the maze, how long, and how far it really goes. the edges would be misted out so it looks like it goes forever. compared to the maze the people holding hands would be really small. But then, hidden in a pattern in the stonework I would secretly hide the word WICKED.

When you turned the book over, it would be an over-the-shoulder view of a passage in the Maze. like you could see a blurred portion of the characters face (it would be shaded/blurred so you couldn't make out a real face) and over his shoulder its an empty, misty passage. but you can just see the outline/shadow of this horrific Reaver

That is how I would make the cover, the guy and girl would obviously appeal to both guys and girls. The maze adds curiosity. If you made WICKED obviously hidden. so where you saw it, but you realize its hidden to the characters - that would add mystery to why it was there.

Then of course the back, you would realize that people do go into the maze, and that there are things in it. more mystery, more intrigue.

So, what do you think, can I pitch this to you? would you accept?

I think its time to call in some favors with my friends and make some official Maze Runner Fanart ^.~

ok, don't get me wrong, I do like the cover. I just think its missing some flare...and I was never a fan of green.

But the book itself? Now the book is amazing! and I could go on for hours and hours about everything I like about it, and how cool James Dashner is, and all of these questions and mysteries he leaves for later!!!! and and and!!!!.....

Dude, I would talk to you for hours given the chance, I want to know your stories inside and out, the background to every single person that ever existed in your story! The background to every single idea thought up by the famous James Dashner! Everything and anything! From A Door in the Woods to the Maze Runner!

Juliana said...

I like it. Evokes some interesting questions and creates a great mood.

Anna said...

I like it. It's simple, mysterious, and kinda classic. :D You go, James!

Angie said...

VERY COOL! Love the colors! Can't wait to see it on the SHELF!

See you Wednesday...

Danyelle Ferguson said...

Hmm . . . I like it. I don't totally love it, but I do like it. Didn't the first cover have kids running out of the maze? I think I like that one better. But I tend to be drawn to covers that make me feel more connected to the characters. This one just makes me think of a dungeon. I don't know that I would have walked by and said, "I've got to pick up that book and see what it's about!!!" The only thing that would draw me (as a reader) to the book is the big JAMES DASHNER on the front. Cause I know if you wrote it, it's awesome.

As you can see, I am spazzing out right now!!!!!! That looks amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Dashner!!!! Woo hooooooooooooooooooo! I bet you are way excited. I know we all are!!!!!!
Besides, you are the only one that gets to see INSIDE the book! hahahaha!

Dashnog: extretti- awesome, amazing, just way above all those. Like when someone says there are no words to describe it, the word to describe it is extretti.

Usage: Dashner, your book cover for Maze, is extretti!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cover is very intriguing and inviting. I would pick this one off the shelf and flip it over to read the back. The cover makes me want to know what it's about. I think it raises a lot more curiosity then the all-black version. The other one showed off the title, but gave me no clue as to what kind of book it was. This one makes me want to know the story behind it.

Isn't it so weird writing a story and having someone else paint a picture for you? Now the whole world will see your book first through someone else's eyes. Covers are like that. It can be kind of scary waiting for the final decision on cover art, but I think this one is really going to serve your book well.

Brodi Ashton said...

I love the cover. I think it looks appropriately bleak (at least, for the story I have in my mind, since I haven't read it.)

Well done!

Deborah Talmadge said...

Besides pink and purple, for some reason girls like green. So more girl friendly.

C. Michelle Jefferies said...

Intriguing, but as Danyelle said not my favorite. But it does look nice and I will add the maze runner to my James Dashner section on my book shelves along with 13th Reality, and the Jimmy Fincher books.

Congrats James you deserve the sucess after all the hard work.

Thanks for the comments so far. Good to know that most of you like it. Those who don't love it, thanks for your honesty! Hopefully the words inside will more than make up for it. :)

I forgot to say the artist's name is Philip Straub. I better add that to the post.

James Dashner said...

Okay, I added a link to his website. Go check it out. Plus, you can see the full painting.

I think it's totally great -- I love it! It's a book that would be so hard to capture but that image is wonderful (and similar to the way I saw it). It's very very intriguing -- I'd totally pick it up to learn more!

Congrats on a fab cover!!!

Valynne said...

That is unbelievably cool! How exciting!

Anonymous said...

I liked it (said more about it in the previous post) Way to go, James!

Unknown said...

I'd buy that. It does look a little bit like the original cover as far as the setup of the maze is concerned, but it doesn't scream "Indiana Jones" to me. Looks pretty sweet.

Anonymous said...

I think it's awesome! This is totally something I would pick up and want to read. Of course, I prefer action books to chick lit anyday, so I'm not your typical female consumer.

Karen Pellett said...

So how does it feel to be on the cusp of releasing your seventh book....AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH.The flames of jealousy are raging within my head (just kidding). That is so awesome. I love the cover and can't wait to read it. I'm already requesting that my library pre-order it. Glad to see you alive and well on Saturday after your pre-pub tour and thanks for the signature.

I like J.N. Future's idea. Not that I don't like the cover, because I do. But having a couple of characters on the front could get me interested. I could also use a little red in the color scheme. But all in all, I like it and, after all, its just the cover. It's what's inside that counts.

stacy said...

I think it's absolutely gorgeous. It's almost exactly how I imagined the maze.

Anonymous said...

I think it protrays a sort of fantastic element. It's larger than life, and that's appealing to me personally.

It looks like you had a great tour. Good luck with the next one.

The Scarlet Tart said...

Well, James, I read through the comments and it looks like you continue to make the rounds. Do you ever stop? I bet you'll have symbols in your hands in the next picture of you that we see.

So? Have you come down off your high? Have you gotten back to work yet?

I like Seth said...

I never saw the last cover so could i see it to compare? I like this one, but I think that JN's idea would rock.

I like Seth said...

Also, I know this has NOTHING to do with the cover for the maze runner, but I have been wondering for like months: What is THE WORLD SIFTER? The title sounds awesome, care to expand? (like in a post on Q&A or something).

Garrett Matthews said...

That looks totally AMAZING! I can't wait to read it.

Haunting and intriguing. Also beautiful.

...................................... I am not going to go in much deatial but the picture itself is fine is more the lay out of the words and the colors do not work well together......I think with the word maze if you changed that to the yellow color in the sky one the photo cover like thing and then for your name make it be a tad bit darker than the word maze...I wish I could play with the pic to show you but ya that would be copyright infringment or somthing like that...idk it is probably to late for you to change anything so thats as much as I will say......word aernflux def helping hands usage I need a aernflux from everyone for a school project.....If you check out my blog it will show the school project I need your help with.....tiki tiki

James Dashner said...

Thanks, everybody! Most of ya seem to like it.

Arlene, symbols in my hands? I don't even know what that means. Clarify. :)

Ilikeseth, you can see the original and complete artwork at the guy's website. That was the original everyone is talking about.

And WORLD SIFTER is a book I wrote that will never get published. In fact, I've already stolen some ideas from it for other things!

numberonedashnerfan said...

I like the whole picture better 2....Idk...just my opponoin......tiki tiki

The Scarlet Tart said...

Ummmm, like the Energizer Bunny? I didn't think I'd have to spell it out. It feels cliche even as I type.

James Dashner said...

Ah. You mean cymbals. lol. Guess I had to spell it out for you! hahahahahaha

Sorry, couldn't resist. I tease because I love.

The Scarlet Tart said...

Okay, I swear I spelled it that way at first and the spell check came up saying it was wrong. Cross my heart.

But really, if you hadn't said something, I would've just thought your were too chicken. So, I'm feelin' the love.

Dedee said...

Looks very cool and my husband immediately thought, "I've got to read that story!"

I have a big announcement to make. Atleast, for James anyways.

I finally finished your book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I know I am crazy and it has taken me forever, but I couldn't find time to read. [Couldn't find time to read?] I really am crazy!)

Anyways, I loved it! It truly was extretti!!!!! Thanks for your brilliant writing expertise. It had me waiting in suspense up until 4:13 in the morning. (I stayed up last night if you couldn't tell.)

Dashnog: dolite- A furry little animal from Medieval times. Closely related to the goblin, with the exception of the fur.

Oic. Well I think that you should let us read The Word Sifter :D

I like Seth said...

okay, i know that i am probably BLIND, but I can't find it. What tab is it under? Or can someone just give me a direct link to the pic?

Unknown said...

I've noticed that when I look at it, I keep taking a closer look at it. Kudos to the artist for making your eyes want to explore the details.

The Scarlet Tart said...

So, I finally got around to finding the full picture on Straub's site (not an easy feat), and now I'm sad that they didn't put the whole thing on the cover. Also, they changed perspectives so the spikes are on the other side from what Straub did in the original. I don't know, I think we got gypped.

Also, I think that your crazy followers get a little excerpt of the book to read. It's just time.

The Scarlet Tart said...

And it's upside down.

The Scarlet Tart said...

Okay, maybe not, but there's something weird going on with it.

I like Seth said...

i can't find it . . . at all.

The Scarlet Tart said...

Click on the link in Dashner's post, then click on the Illustrations link at the left of the creepy pic in the center of the page. Scroll down to the sixth row and its the second pic in from the left.

James its allot better than the black and white cover you had isn't that the important part.....oh and by the way I showed the cover too my dad and he thought it was cool......tiki tiki

Jack Swiggett said...

I think the cover is really cool. Although I think the original cover was cooler. The blurred people are a little weird, but other than that they should have used the original. It's right here: http://www.philipstraub.com/The%20Maze%20Runner.htmThis is Jack Swiggett from Washington Middle School in Seattle.
