Dead People and Drummers

Well, still having fun in New England, but it's off to South Carolina tomorrow. This East Coast swing definitely has history written all over it - I'll be in the Charleston area. Can't wait!

Thanks to these schools in Mass: Millis Middle School and Milford Catholic Elementary. Had a great time. It was also great to see Gail "Irisheyz" from Library Thing - one of the very first readers of THE JOURNAL OF CURIOUS LETTERS. Thanks for hanging out with me!

Due to some scheduling blips, I ended up having lots of time to explore. I spent an entire day in Salem and an entire day in Boston. I can only imagine how many miles I walked, and my poor little feet hurt. But it was really awesome.

Here are some pictures. Sorry for my obsession with graveyards, but I was in hog heaven seeing such old cemeteries. I can't believe how creepy the tombstones were back then! Also, those Boston street performing drummers on the bottom - seriously one of the Top Ten Coolest Things I've ever witnessed. Simply amazing - I didn't want to leave them.

oh! Those are some creepy graves! especially the one with the skulls and such. i would hate to meet the person that choose that as their headstone!

The skull with wings was actually a very common theme back then. All symbols had a meaning and those meanings helped to convey something about the person who was buried.

The skull & wings repsent the fragility of life and how the bones remain but the soul has departed. The images on the side might be laurel leaves...hard to tell for sure though...but if they are then those usually repsent that the soul is finding peace.

The history of the carvings on the old headstones is really quite fascinating.

Also...it was really great hanging out with you too JD. Be sure to look me up the next time you're in the area. Did you ever make it over to Harvard?

Hey, I came through this cemetery too last halloween! It's awesome! They have real witches and tons of creepy people and costumes everywhere. The trees and houses of the town are so naturally creepy. If you're coming through New York - make sure you look me up man - B

Gail was telling me about her visit with you - it sounds like you all had a great time! Hopefully you can make it to Michigan sometime.

Isn't Salem a great place to visit? I've been there a couple of times now and have so much fun every time.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that Salem is a very special place for me since my 10th great-grandmother was hanged at a witch trial there. Maybe you saw her grave? Susanna North Martin . . .

I have finally had time to open my copy of The 13th Reality--AND I LOVE IT! James, you do a great job of pulling the reader in, teasing us with tidbits that make us hold our breath and wonder what is going to happen next.
I am a WIP author (work in progress; writer in pre-published phase; want it published--whatever). Your story of how you connected with Shadow Moutain, your writing style, and your success is an inspiration to me.

I love cemeteries, too! In fact, one year for my birthday, my hubby and I went cemetery hopping. It was fascinating to see all the different headstones - especially the older ones. Our babysitter thought I was a bit loony for being so excited about something so odd, in her opinion. :)
