The top one is the preliminary cover they used for the ARC. They told me the artist is making a few more changes. Also, the titles will be in silvery embossed foil and there will be sparkly sumthins in those shooting lights.
The bottom one is the cover for a booklet they just sent to press that will have the first 2 chapters, a letter from me, and a sample of the book's glossary. You might start seeing those in bookstores in 3 or 4 weeks.
The artist's name is Bryan Beus. He has officially joined the Dashner Dude's Top Twenty Most Favored People List, bumping Abe Lincoln to Number 21. Also, major kudos go out to Richard Erickson and his incredible team at Shadow Mountain.
So . . . what do you think?

Tick's even got his scarf--way cool looking, dude! Congrats.
What an exciting and interesting cover. Can't wait to read inside. Congratulations, James and crew.
It's been a long time since I have liked a cover.
ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS ONE! It's great!
This is a way cool cover, James! I love it!
It's gorgeous!! Congratulations!
Are you familiar with Crush the Turtle from Finding Nemo? I hope so, or the following will make no sense to you:
"Righteous, righteouuuuuuus!"
That's me. Right now. Loving it.
Congratulations!
Whoa--love the cover, Dude. I'm so ham-dappy for you!
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!
I love it! Holy cow! Makes me want to redo your entire website in pretty blue colors. LOL!
Will the booklets be out here?
Very cool! I like the font a lot. :)
James,
It looks great. Congrats.

Very nice!!! Congrats. At first I wondered what kind of "iron-on" the kid had on his white shirt. Then when I enlarged the picture, I saw that it was the journal.
Gorgeous cover.
It makes me want to pick up the book and that's what covers are all about.
What a relief that so many like it. I kind of lost my objectivity because I saw it in stages. But I really like it, too.
I won't say thank you because I had absolutely nothing to do with the cover! Well, I did write that riddle, but people are already arguing with me on its solution. Isn't it obviously March 13th?
btw, the same artist is doing 12 full page illustrations for the inside of the book. Unfortunately, those won't be in the ARC.
Uh, I noticed on the booklet there's a web addy. Does this mean a new site's in the works?! EEE!
Yeah, they'll be setting up the13threality.com before the booklet comes out. Don't worry, we'll never let jamesdashner.com die!!!!!
But the good news: they did use your photo of me in the booklet and it says "photo courtesy of Sarah Kiesche". And they're printing 20,000, so look at all those potential customers for your photography co.
I just wish I didn't look like a smiling goon in the photo, but that ain't your fault.
looks fabulous! Congratulations.
Looks awesome!
James -
Awesome cover! I love it!
I liked the cover and back for the teaser chapters. You asked if the riddle was confusing or not. I solved the riddle, but since I had seen your other riddles, I had a bit of an idea what was going on. Now John - he thought it was Feb 13th. Silly boy! So one of us got it right on and the other was a month off.
Good luck! I'm so excited for you! I've been talking to some of the older elem kids out here and some of the high schoolers and there are a bunch just waiting for the new book! If you ever make it out this way, but sure to let me know so I can set up a signing or some schools for you, etc.
Keep in touch!
Very cool cover, James!
What an awesome cover! That's a sure sell if I've ever seen one! Congrats!!!!
Freakin' sweet!!!!! Like awesome I totally seriously love love love it!!!! Coolest cover I ever did see!
Love it.
Just finished Jimmy Fincher today. ..
Dang, that looks good!!
Danyelle, tell Jon I'm deeply disappointed in him. I thought he was smarter than that.
Dedee, I hope Jimmy Fincher provided you with at least a few moments of reading pleasure. Thanks for reading my stuff!
Looks great! And... does the riddle have something to do with Feb 12th? Or is my calculating off a bit? lol! 'Cuz if it's the 12th, that's my wedding anniversary :D Great cover :D
Well, the riddle is a little tricky. You start on New Year's Day, January 1st. Add six months and you would end up on July 1st. Take away 4 months, and you'd be on March 1st. Add one week to that and you'd be on March 8th. 5 more days and you have March 13th.
Don't worry, a lot of people are coming up with February 12th. I guess I should improve my riddle writing skills! :-)
Off topic: Dude, I tagged you for a meme today on my blog. Please play?
Brilliant! Being one hundred percent honest, I'd pick that up and buy it for the cover alone!
p.s. I love that you have to solve the riddle to find out the release date. Brilliant!
The cover looks awesome and I am so excited to read the ARC. I've been working hard on a nonfiction book and it is going to be my reward for meeting my word limit!
In your wildest dreams, how many books do you think will sell within the first 6 months? I know you said they're printing a ton. I'm just curious to see how far up you're climbing that "I'm a famous author tower." Good luck!
Rachelle, excellent question.
If I can sell through the first print run of 40,000 copies in the first six months, I will be the happiest man alive.
Glad you like the cover.
Congratulations! Just from the cover I'm already intrigued. Best of luck to you.
