ALA Awards

I'd love to hear any of your thoughts on this. Let the arguing begin!

Personally, I'm extremely pumped about Neil Gaiman winning the Newbery for THE GRAVEYARD BOOK. He went out of his way to spend 15 minutes talking to Brandon Mull and me at BEA, and I've never forgotten it. He is such an awesome dude. And his book rocks.

Well, I'm WAY psyched today because my friend and mentor Kathi Appelt won a Newbery Honor for THE UNDERNEATH. Here's a little inspirational story about the "making" of this book...

Before the release of THE UNDERNEATH, Kathi was known for her rhyming picture books--hadn't written anything novel length. But Kathi said she got to the point that if she wrote another rhyming picture book she was going to go crazy. But she also felt paralyzed by the process of writing a longer book, so she didn't write anything for quite a while. Finally, she told her agent she was going to be sending her 25 pages a week, and she wanted the agent to hold her accountable for it (basically, her own little mind game). So this is what she did for several months until she had the first draft of THE UNDERNEATH. The book then went through about a dozen or so revisions--can't exactly remember the number--over about a 2 year period with her agent. She cut 100 or so pages--an entire plotline, an entire family, was eliminated from the story. She said it was brutal. But look what she has now! THE UNDERNEATH was also chosen as a National Book Award finalist a few months back.

The Graveyard Book ROCKS. It was my #1 book last year (not that the press picked up on that at all).

I wish Octavian Nothing had won in its category; it's amazing.

Ack! You're totally right. The Hunger Games should have gotten something.

But The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks was quite hilarious.

Congrats to all the winners!

Ummm...I'm not sure I have heard or read any of those books. I guess I am missing out. I'll definitely add those to my "To Read" list. All though my "To Read" list and my "To Do" list is the same. Hmmmm...I wonder how that happened....

Anyways, congratulations to all the winners. Too bad you didn't win James.

I guess you are too good for them and they are just too jealous!

You're a winner in my book!

I haven't heard of any of these books. And only a couple of the authors. I'm definitely going to read The Graveyard and The Underneath.

Maybe we can give The Hunger Games the People's award or something :)
